What are porosity and permeability?
What are aquifers and aquitards?
What are unconfined and confined aquifers?
Give examples of a geologic material which tends to make an
aquifer.
Give examples of a geologic material which tends to make an
aquitard.
What is the water table and what type of aquifer does it occur
in?
What is the piezometric or potentiometric surface and what
type of aquifer does it occur in?
What is an artesian well?
What are recharge and discharge areas?
What is the hydraulic gradient? Be able to calculate it from 2 water levels and the distance between
them. Example: 2 Wells measure water levels of 10 ft and 9
ft and are separated by a distance of 25 ft.
What is the hydraulic gradient?
Given Darcy’s Law, Q = K A dh/dl, be able to calculate discharge
when given hydraulic conductivity. Be
able to calculate hydraulic gradient (see above), and be able to recognize cross-sectional
area (perpendicular to the direction of flow – just like in streams)
Given the form of Darcy’s Law, v = [K dh/dl]/porosity, be able
to calculate water velocity from hydraulic conductivity, gradient and porosity.
From velocity, be able to calculate how long it will take to travel a
given distance.
What is baseflow?
