EVERYONE SHOULD REVIEW THE CONCEPT OF DIMENSIONAL ANALYSIS (page 365-367 in Sanders)
All calculations should show units of variables and crossing out to get resulting correct end units!

SCHEDULE: Friday classes will start at 8 or 9 AM and will be of variable length. Saturday classes will start at 8 or 9 AM and the entire day (till dark) should be planned for these sessions. Meeting place will be posted on web site and discussed in previous class. Changes in the above schedule may be required due to rain or equipment problems.
COURSE DESCRIPTION: Application of theory and instrumentation in hydrogeologic parameter estimation and measurements. This is a hands-on class with no lecture. Students are expected to read appropriate text pages and read handout/internet material BEFORE the appropriate class.
Written review exercises must be completed by the student prior to the field/lab exercise. These exercises review theoretical material covered in Geol551 (and Applied Hydrogeology by Fetter) or your textbook. New theoretical material is presented for many exercises. The material from 551 will be a review for students who have takent the Geol551 class. STUDENTS WHO HAVE NOT TAKEN 551 ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR READING/UNDERSTANDING THE REVIEW MATERIAL ON THEIR OWN - Please allot sufficient time for you to get yourself up to speed on what may be unfamiliar material. Think of this as distance learning via the Internet for the theoretical material (both new and old). Background Exercises are linked on the web site.
Save these files to your harddrive from Internet Explorer and open in Word to type in your answers. Attach any handwritten calculations (neatly written). Print out a second copy for yourself to compare to the answers (will be posted on the website).
TEXT: A Manual of Field Hydrogeology by Laura L. Sanders (1998)
SUPPLIES: Hardhat, Field notebook, work gloves, hat, sunscreen and beach chair for field day
Geotechnical Gauge which can be purchased from National Groundwater Association Store (click through to the store and then use search option for geotechnical gauge - $15 plus $5 shipping - [$12 plus $5 shipping if NGWA member) or at bookstore
COMPUTER ACCOUNTS: You must obtain a key access card for CSL building access and CG computer room access. See Marie Grace in the department office. You must also have a Geological Sciences computer account. If you do not have a current account, give me your name and social security number.
GRADING: 100% Participation in exercises and written reports and background exercises. Background exercises are due on the day of the class as shown on the schedule. No late background exercises will be accepted.
LAB AND FIELD REPORTS: You will be required to write your field reports in scientific report format. In the first class, the basics of writing scientific reports will be covered.
LATE POLICY: Background exercises will not be accepted past the due date. For reports, each week late = 10 %. No reports will be accepted 2 weeks past the due date.
