Oceans 320 is a survey of the complex ocean system. The course emphasizes the use of scientific principles to understand the processes that govern the oceans and why things are the way they are.

This course satisfies the upper division science requirement and assumes no previous ocean related courses.

Some aspects considered:

  • The ocean floor features and how they came to be.
  • Soft sediments on the floor - how the world's past climate is recorded in bottom mud.
  • Which way the water moves & why.
  • Tides: the micro extraterrestrial forces that push the oceans around from top to bottom.
  • If you knew the ocean currents, you could sail around the world in a bathtub.
  • The way that distant Pacific storms determine the nature of San Diego's beaches
  • How close to the ocean should your condo be?
  • Life in the ocean.
  • How life in the sea help establish and control the earth's atmospheric environment.
  • What the coastal winds have to do with the productivity of the coastal ocean.
