Scientific American Recognized "How Volcanoes Works" as one of the best sci/tech sites for 2004 How Volcanoes Work There's enough magma, lava and pyroclastic flow to keep both novice and expert occupied for centuries here at NASA's volcanism HQ. Fire up your knowledge of different types of eruptions, the environments and controls of the various landforms that give rise to volcanoes, famous volcanoes from history--and then test yourself on all the explosive knowledge you've picked up along the way. Real hot shots can immerse themselves in a full section on the eruption activity on other planets and “Spatter Patter,” the volcano crossword. 10.04.2004
Special Guest - Dr. Rachel Teasdale - October 27th Rachel is a volcanologist who studies the lava flow emplacement processes. Her research is focused on basaltic lava flows and how their compositions and crystals change while the lavas are active. To do this, Rachel collects lava samples (preferably while they’re still flowing!) and analyzes their chemical compositions. She also uses experiments to reproduce crystallization that occurs as magmas rise through a volcano on the way to the Earth’s surface. Rachel’s field sites include volcanoes in the Galápagos Islands, Hawaii, Cameroon, and Northern California. She is interested in the seamounts of the Gulf of Alaska in terms of the emplacement of submarine lavas and the growth of oceanic volcanoes. 10.22.2004
